The Comptroller’s Audit Division helps ensure fair and equitable application and administration of the state’s tax laws. It conducts cost-efficient audits, verifies taxpayer refund requests and undertakes special projects involving a wide range of state taxes, fees and other revenue sources, including those authorized by law in the Alcoholic Beverage and Insurance codes.
The Business Activity Research Team conducts examinations and investigations to identify revenue sources outside the scope of routine auditing and enforcement. The group also offers a variety of taxpayer services and educational seminars to encourage voluntary compliance by all Texas taxpayers.
The Audit Division’s 22 field offices perform tax compliance audits.
Many audit field offices are located near taxpayer service and collection field offices, which provide many types of assistance such as helping taxpayers file tax returns and applying for tax permits.
