The government sector administers and provides goods and services – some of which are also provided in the private sector – in health care, education, transportation, military and more. In 2016, the government sector contributed $175 BILLION to the state’s GDP, accounting for more than 10 percent of total state GDP. WOMEN HOLD MORE THAN HALF OF THE STATE’S 2.1 MILLION JOBS IN THIS SECTOR.

Not surprisingly, given the large numbers of women working in public education and healthcare – programs administered at the state and local levels – state government and local government have the highest shares of jobs held by women.
A higher share of Texas women work in government than in the nation as a whole.
Based on location quotient (LQ), a measure of employment concentration in a given area, the concentration of government jobs held by women in Texas is 1.03 times higher than the concentration of government jobs held by women at the national level.
Since 2010, the average monthly earnings of Texas women in government increased by 15 percent.
