The 13-county Gulf Coast region covers about 13,900 square miles in eastern coastal Texas, stretching from Huntsville in the north to Matagorda Bay and Galveston.
Nearly a quarter of the state’s population lives in the Gulf Coast region. If the region was a state, it would be the 14th most populous. The region contains one metropolitan statistical area (MSA), the Houston-The Woodlands-Sugar Land MSA.
The region’s overall growth was led by Fort Bend County, increasing nearly 41 percent from 2010 to 2020.

The 3.2 million people employed in the region in 2020 held about a quarter of Texas jobs. The most concentrated industries include those supporting oil and gas and petrochemical production. These industries have a high location quotient (LQ), indicating they’re unique to the regional economy. The warehousing and storage industry led regional job gains between 2015 and 2020.
Employment growth in the Gulf Coast region grew by 15.2%, compared to Texas at 17.1% and the U.S. at 7.8%.
