Texas Comptroller Glenn Hegar is highlighting the impact of Texas colleges and universities in the fight against cybercriminals as he continues his Good for Texas Tour.
“Texas ranked third among states in the number of cybercrime victims and second in the number of financial losses in 2017,” Hegar said. “Unfortunately, cybercriminals see Texas’ large, ever-growing population as a large and ever-growing pool of potential targets. Thankfully, our state’s colleges and universities have developed nationally recognized programs that produce the highly skilled professionals needed to address these challenges while creating high-wage, high-demand jobs for Texans.”
“UTEP’s cybersecurity education and research programs, student recruitment efforts and cybersecurity center — combined with unique access to military research projects — have made this university a significant contributor to the nation’s cybersecurity workforce,” Hegar said.
“The University of Houston continues to strengthen the cybersecurity workforce and develop the tools and technologies needed to face global security challenges,” Hegar said. “Graduates from UH cybersecurity programs go on to work for some of the world’s largest consulting firms, banks, energy companies and software developers.”
“Texas A&M’s commitment to the development of world-class cybersecurity programs has placed it at the forefront of cybersecurity research and workforce development,” Hegar said. “By advancing cyber defense and research; recruiting internationally renowned faculty; and collaborating with high schools, veterans’ programs and two-year colleges throughout the state, Texas A&M is sharpening the tools and technologies needed to face global security challenges.”
“UTSA’s superior training and educational opportunities – combined with its close proximity to cybersecurity offices and installations of the NSA, Department of Homeland Security, FBI and Air Force – have helped the San Antonio area become a nationally recognized hub for cybersecurity.”
