Marine Biology is the study of animals and plants that dwell or grow in bodies of water or the aquatic world in relation to their environment. A marine biologist is, a specialist trained and certified in the discipline of marine biology. Marine biologists are responsible for devising ways and strategies of preserving the ideal environment required to sustain marine life, besides studying and researching on aquatic life. There are other sub-braches of marine biology as one progresses in the academic ladder, but all of them concentrate on the aspects of marine life and organisms (Kaplan 28). Most of their activities are conducted in large and medium-sized bodies of water where aquatic life exists. Students have to understand many concepts of oceanography in order to be successful in this field of study.

There are numerous opportunities associated with Marine Biology. Currently, the world has assumed a trend and many countries are involved in preserving marine life. The process of preserving and ensuring continuity of marine life requires experts in the field (Adrian 118). Marine Biologists advise policy makers on the nature of marine life and the attributes of an ideal environment to support aquatic life. They are also significant in medicine, especially with the recent rise of herbal medicine. Biologists study marine organisms that have medicinal values and work with medics in developing medicinal drugs from such organisms. Rarely will a marine biologist lack working since water coverage on Earth is over 70%. Marine biologists may also have opportunities in the military, research firms and departments, as well as in academic teaching among other fields.

To study Marine Biology, one needs to attain high marks in biology, chemistry, mathematics, and physics. It also requires physical fitness in order to navigate through waters efficiently. A person needs to learn diving and practice frequently in order to master the skills. Some of the marine organisms live far below the sea level, and that could require learning how to deep dive in order to access such organisms. Apparently, some ocean trenches run as deep as 10911 meters below the water surface (Thomas 73). An individual may also be required to remain outdoors for a long time in order to get in contact with marine organisms. However, a career in Marine biology provides satisfaction in that one gets in contact with nature and gets to see some aspects of the universe that everyone else may not see in a lifetime.

My name is Victoria and I was first introduced to Marine Biology as a young child by my father. We have always had fish aquariums throughout our home. My father knows exactly how to balance the chemicals in the aquariums, he has always shared the visits to the fish stores with me. It was through the many years of cleaning tanks, buying new fish and healing sick fish with my father that truly inspired me to be interested in Marine Biology. I have had this desire since I was a first grader and I have excelled in science studies because of my passion to understand. Through the research for this paper one can see that there are benefits to Marine Biology both for the planet earth and to those that live here.
