Audiology: A Career For Me

For my future career, I have been thinking back and forth about it. For right now, I have thought about having a career in audiology. Audiologists diagnose and treat patients with hearing and balance problems. I am interested in Audiology, because it seems like an enjoyable career choice. Also, my mom is a teacher of the deaf, so that made me think to be in a career that dealt with hearing.

New Audiologists must earn a doctoral degree to practice in the field. The first step to become an audiologist is to get a bachelor’s degree, which is typically in speech pathology or deaf education. For national certification there must be a minimum of 1,800 hours of supervised clinical practice.

Audiologists may work in hospitals, physician offices, audiology clinics, research laboratories, and some schools. Audiology is expected to grow faster than average jobs according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics: by 37% between 2010 and 2020.

To learn about this career I talked with my mom about it, since she is in a connected field. I also did research on the computer, to go in depth and find that it was something I wanted to do. Lastly, I used personal interviews with a certified Texas Audiologist. I think Audiology would be a good fit for me since Audiologists should have strong analytical skills, and a passion for science. The ability to help people in an important way is also very important to me.
