Hello, my name is Emily. For the longest time, I've wanted to be an interior designer. Why you may ask? It's simple. I've always been interested with how homes or buildings in general have been made to look appealing to others. Planning how a building looks on the inside and the functions and things it will be able to do to help people is fascinating and something I'd like to do.
The type of design I would like to go into as an interior designer would be in health care design. I'd like to be able to create rooms in hospitals or doctor's offices that are comforting for not only a patient, but the patient's family; but also functional and a comfortable area for doctors to work and also spend a great deal of their day in. I feel that if I put a lot of effort and time into this job, I'll be able to change how a lot of people feel about staying in hospitals or visiting doctor's offices. In my opinion, that would be a big accomplishment for me as a person.
Interior designers usually have a bachelor's degree in interior design. In order to work toward my bachelor's degree, I would like to attend Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York. From what I have researched, Pratt Institute has the best interior design program. And in order to get where I want to be in life, I feel I should attend a school that is well known for this kind of program.
There are businesses who hire interior designers that work on a day to day basis, while there are others who work for small firms on a contract basis. The last kind of interior designers are the ones who are self employed. Yes they don't earn as much pay and aren't guaranteed to have a long lasting job, but I feel that having my own firm would establish that I want to be taken seriously. Yes, there will be money issues, but hard work will pay off in the end.
I first heard of interior designers when I listened in on one of my teacher's conversations with another teacher. Curious about what one was, I went home and asked my mom. With the brief amount of information she gave me, I later looked up the real meaning of an interior designer, and I became interested in what they do. Soon, being an interior designer became the main focus on any school assignments that had anything to do with future jobs or what I wanted to do with my life. Later, it became a big part of me. Whenever I go into a room, I ask myself how it could've been set up better and how it makes people feel when they walk into one. Do they feel sad? Do they feel comforted? How about happy? I want to be able to create moods in rooms and make them functional for people. For me, I believe that would be a great accomplishment.
All in all, I believe I will get to where I want to be. I know that with determination, I will be able to graduate high school, go to college and become an interior designer. Who knows what I'll be able to do. Maybe I'll change lives or maybe even own my own business and become successful.
